Mexico
Vaquero

Vaquero Fruits started back in the spring of 1988. It started with one of 4 brothers. His name was Roga Vaquero. He and his brothers always went to Red Hook Park to watch the soccer games, when it was time to eat he notice that they weren't any food stands around, nor where they any restaurants. The neighborhood itself seemed so abandoned since there were old warehouses and factories. So, he remembered when him and his brothers use to go to the Zocalo (the center of a village) in Ahuehuetitla, Mexico where they had food and drink stands all around. He remembered growing up eating mangos and lots of fruits from a near by stand in the village. That same day he went home and discussed his idea with the rest of his brothers. They thought of a way to sell mangos and fruits at the park. They built a little stand where he would be able to place the mangos on a stick so he can show everyone who came to Red Hook Park and be able to sell the delicious mangos. As more people came to Red Hook Park, they would notice the mango stand and would bring up some good memories of our Mexican Tradition. He then proceeded on selling watermelon, and cucumbers, etc. It was a great idea, as at the time they were other food vendors rapidly growing around the park. Red Hook Park became alive, it wasn't abandoned anymore...

Vaquero Fruits started with 4 brothers, Roga Vaquero, Roberto Vaquero, Javier Vaquero, and Everardo Vaquero. Due to many years and of old age the business is passed on between brothers...Recently one of the brothers Javier Vaquero passed away on {1/2008]. It was a very difficult time for the Vaquero brothers. Javier Vaquero and his wife MariaLuisa Vaquero came up with the concept of selling delicious fruit drinks. They brought up the idea of selling the delicious coconut (orchata), limeade, watermelon, and hibuscus drinks. They also started selling the fruits in plastic baskets and the now infamous "Elotes" corn on a stick. Javier was a very caring and loving person, which all the family and friends very much miss. We love you and miss you deeply "Tio" Javier Vaquero.

He passed down the business to his brother now owner, Everardo Vaquero. He and his wife Maria F. Vaquero now own the food truck and run the business with their daughter Noelia Macias. The Vaquero Fruits business will continue with our Mexican tradition in selling our delicious fruits and drinks...and we will continue to lighten up Red Hook Park for many more years to come.
